TOTAL Home Makeover!! Day 2...
Reading labels is so important. Health and wellness is on the rise, especially with the recent global pandemic. Consumers are becoming more conscious about their purchases and this has marketers and mainstream companies scrambling in desperation to keep your purchase. So many tricky marketing buzzwords and imagery to appear to safe, but are they?

It gives me hope that there are so many people becoming conscious consumers and educating themselves on the risks of toxins. Nearly every product on the market has some "green" or "all natural" product. With that comes a cost increase. Many of those products contain the same harmful ingredients as all the others. Greenwashing is conveying misleading information about a product being more environmentally sound or safe. "All natural" and "Green" do not mean non toxic! In fact there are no regulations on the term "natural" and is incredibly misleading to consumers. Be very wary of product claims.

There is a list of more than one thousand harmful chemicals that are banned in the European Union, of those only ten appear on the list in the US. Did you know that for food labels the ingredients is listed by quantity? Did you know that in cleaning products and personal care products it is not? Remember yesterday when we discuss that bioaccumulation and that many of the harmful chemicals found in our products are deemed safe in small quantities. (Things that make you go hmmmm...) There is little to no regulation in the US on harmful chemicals in our products, this is alarming!!! So many ingredients with BIG looooooooong intimidating names, just toss them in Google and dig around a bit. You will be loaded with cautions and warning and a realization that many of these common ingredients are carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, respiratory irritants, and causing your body to be in defense overload!

Here is a quick guide of a few ingredients to watch out for...

  • Fragrance is found in nearly everything scented and is linked to cancer, asthma, hormone disruption, nervous system disorders.
  • Parabens found in preservatives and is linked to breast cancer and hormone disruption.
